Simple steps to not feeling like this after work

Many of us have jobs that require us to sit for extended periods of time, looking at a monitor.  We all know the feeling of prolonged sitting, tension in the upper back, stiff shoulders, sore and painful lower back- just to name a few.  Unfortunately, those problems often caused by sitting are warning signs of things far worse than sore muscles and joints.

Dr. Joan Vernikos, a NASA researcher, has published and reported on a growing body of evidence that sitting for prolonged periods of time is directly linked to early disease process and mortality1.  Movement is essential to life, and a lack of that movement leads to disease process such as: muscle wasting, osteoporosis, heart disease, and obesity.  The poor posture associated with sitting further increases our forward head posture, which is directly linked to reduced lung capacity, headaches, and heart disease.

Preventing poor posture and the negative effects of sitting can be accomplished by following these steps:

  1. If you do work in a job requiring excessive periods of sitting, make sure to stand up atleast once every 10-15 minutes.  Dr. Joan Vernikos states that the simple act of standing intermittently when seated can help to counteract some of these degenerative effects.
  2. Place a “sticky note” on the side of your monitor to remind you to keep your ears over your shoulders.  It is a simple thing that will constantly remind you as you glance at it periodically throughout the day.
  3.  Have your spine checked for damage and misalignment. If you have already undergone or are currently under corrective care, maintain your healthy spine and adjustments by turning your desk into an ergonomic workplace.  Position your monitor directly in front of your eyes, change your seat to a BOSU ball, and keep your legs angled downward towards the floor.
  4. Ask a local doctor if they can teach your office proper posture for sitting.  We do community outreach each month to help local businesses and their employees reach their optimum health potential.  Now that you have the information, it is your responsibility to help those around you.
